What is EFT Tapping?

Emotional Freedom Technique — commonly known as EFT or tapping — is a gentle, non-invasive practice that combines elements of acupressure and psychology. By tapping on specific meridian points on the face and body while holding a thought, feeling, or memory in mind, EFT sends a calming signal to the amygdala — the brain's threat-response centre — reducing the emotional charge attached to that experience.

EFT is one of the most versatile therapeutic tools available. Research by Dr Peta Stapleton and Dr Dawson Church has demonstrated measurable reductions in cortisol (the stress hormone) and changes in brain activity following EFT sessions. It is effective for anxiety, grief, trauma, phobias, chronic stress, low self-esteem, pain, and much more.

How Does EFT Work?

A typical EFT session begins with a setup statement — acknowledging the issue while offering self-acceptance — followed by tapping through a series of acupressure points while voicing the feeling or belief. This combination of body-based stimulation and psychological focus appears to interrupt the stress response and allow the emotional intensity to reduce, often quickly and durably.

EFT can be used in-session with a practitioner, and — crucially — it can be learnt and used independently. Clients leave each session with a concrete, physical tool they can reach for whenever they need it.

Surrogate Tapping

For very young children or individuals who are unable to tap themselves, surrogate tapping can be used — where the practitioner taps on their own body on behalf of the client. This is a well-established extension of EFT practice and is particularly valuable when working with young children aged under 7, or those with additional needs.
